Auction: 22004 - The Jean-Marie Vanmeerbeeck and Simon English Esq. Collections of English Hammered and Milled Coins
Lot: 111

Henry VII (1485-1509), Alabaster [?] Portrait Model, in the style of Nicholas Hilliard's 16th Century Miniature, capped bust left, saltire of roses before neck, HEN VII REX below truncation, encased in oval black-wood frame, 100 x 90mm., marked to reverse: Henry VII, 14a, a probable 18th or 19th Century production or conceivably earlier, extremely fine, and with an esteemed pedigree

Provenance
From Collection by John G. Murdoch, Sol[d by So]theby & Co., [31 Marc]h 1903

The famous Murdoch collection was sold across eight catalogues between March 1903 and December 1904 and consisted of 5,386 lots. Curiously no historical medals are listed in his sales for 1903, and only one Henry VII Gold medal is listed for the sale in June 1904. The attribution label remains somewhat confusing although its style is unquestionably contemporary with these famous dispersals.

The Exhibition of the Royal House of Tudor at the New Gallery, Regent Street in 1890 lists under no. 14 in its official catalogue a portrait of Henry VII lent by the Earl of Essex. It is interesting this is number 14a.
