Edwin James Mackie was born in Plymouth, Devon on 10 September 1897 and entered the Royal Navy as a Shipwright 4th Class in March 1919.
Shortly afterwards, he joined H.M.S. Benbow, in which capacity he gained entitlement to the British War and Victory Medals for her part in operations against the Bolsheviks in the Black Sea in the period April 1919 to June 1920; in January of the latter year, Benbow sailed from Constantinople to Novorossiysk, where she rescued 150 Russian troops and their British adviser.
Mackie, who was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1934, was serving ashore as a Chief Shipwright on the renewal of hostilities in September 1939.
He joined the cruiser Carlisle in January 1940 but it proved to be a short-lived appointment for he was admitted to the R.N.H. Malta two or three months later. Back home, he was appointed an Acting Warrant Shipwright in March 1943.
