Donald Sutherland was born at Edinburgh, Scotland but moved out to Southern Rhodesia to continue his work as an electrician, living at 117 Victoria Street, Salisbury. Having voted in the 1939 elections, he enlisted in the British South Africa Police on 15 May 1941. He is also confirmed as having been awarded the Southern Rhodesia Service Medal 1939-45 (No. 742); sold together with copied research.
