Henry Hall was born at Shanklin, Isle of Wight on 22 September 1888 and worked as a greengrocer prior to enlistment on 14 March 1907. He saw service with a number of vessels prior to the Great War, including Essex, Philomel and Fearless before being posted to Birmingham as Cook's Mate.

Birmingham was part of the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron, Commanded by Commodore Goodenough at Jutland. Their role in the early stages of the battle was as a scouting force for Beatty's battlecruisers, indeed it was this squadron which confirmed the sighting of the High Seas Fleet for the British. They came under the guns of the German fleet for over an hours during this period but were able to frustrate their efforts with careful manoeuvring and none the British ships took a single hit.

During the night of 31 May they encountered a German Light Cruiser Squadron and a short skirmish was fought. Fortunately Brimingham had not raised her lights and as such was not caught in the enemy fire.

Hall continued to serve being promoted Leading Cook's Mate on 1 April 1917 with H.M.S. Orford. Finally promoted Petty Officer Cook with H.M.S. Winchelsea and finally retired on 27 May 1927; sold toether with copied service papers.
