Joining the Somersetshire Constabulary in June 1920, he served initially as a Mounted Policeman at Frome from August 1920-July 1923. At Weston-Super-Mare from July 1923-September 1933, he was awarded the Silver Medal of the R.S.P.C.A. for the rescue of a cat in February 1930, besides an award of £2 from Lord Hylton's Fund for the same event. Commended on no less than 21 occasions during his career, these included his work in a case of larceny (April 1941) and also for '...resourcefulness & tact in enquiries concerned with the moral welfare of members of HM Forces' (June 1941).
