Four: Petty Officer G. Whyte, Royal Navy, who served aboard H.M.S. Midge at the Battle of Jutland

George Whyte was born at Dundee, Forfar on 3 November 1879 and enlisted with the Royal Navy at the cadet ship Caledonia on 7 May 1895 as Boy Class II. Reaching adulthood aboard H.M.S. Cossack on 3 November 1897 he was promoted Able Seaman with the same vessel on 1 April 1898.

Whyte saw service on a range of vessels prior to the Great War including Marathon, Australia and Leander. Posted to H.M.S. Hecla for the destroyer Midge just prior to the outbreak of hostiles on 17 March 1914 with the rank of Petty Officer.

He was still with this vessel at the Battle of Jutland under Lieutenant-Commander R. C. Cavendish while she was stationed with the 4th Destroyer Flotilla. Detached from the Flotilla at the start of the Battle, Midge was detached to escort the 2nd Cruiser Squadron.

Posted to the destroyer Onslow after the battle on 15 July 1916 ,Whyte served with her for the majority of the remaining hostilities. Returning ashore to Victory I on 30 July 1918 he was discharged on 27 November 1919; sold together with copied service papers.
