Edward Eugene Lewis lived at Edinburgh, Scotland and was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Lewis, his father being a Fleet Engineer for the Royal Navy. Entering the navy with the rank of Probationary Assistant Engineer in May 1891 and was posted to H.M.S. Conqueror on 19 February 1892.
Promoted Engineer on 1 October 1897 while serving aboard the Hood Lewis saw service with a number of vessels throughout his service prior to the Great War, notably Houge, Albatross and Aquarius. Further advanced Engineer Commander with the latter on 1 October 1909 he was still service with this rank aboard the cruiser Shannon on the outbreak of the Great War.
In the early years of the war this vessel was tasked with sweeping the North Sea for German commerce raiders, a role which resulted in her facing air attack resulting in her having anti-aircraft guns mounted. Shannon, under Captain Dumaresq, was part of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron during the Battle of Jutland. Lewis remained with Shannon after the battle, retiring on 1 July 1921 with the rank of Engineer Captain; sold together with typed research.
