William Henry Joseph Hillier was born at Frome, Somerset on 30 October 1876 and was a porter by trade upon his joining the Royal Marines on 3 July 1896. Having seen active service off South Africa (Medal without clasp) and China (Medal without clasp), he was discharged ashore at Simons Town, South Africa on 19 April 1904.
