(x) Pair: Gunner S. Ratcliffe, Royal Navy, who was Commended for his work with the guns of the Naval Brigade from Terrible during the Boer War and further awarded an M.B.E. for his work after a Zeppelin Raid on Ramsgate

[M.B.E.] London Gazette 7 June 1918. An award for his work for zeal and good service at Ramsgate following a Zeppelin raid in June 1917.

Sidney Ratcliff was born at Minster, Kent on 25 May 1881 and was at school upon his joining the Royal Navy on 27 July 1896. He served aboard Terrible from 24 March 1898-24 October 1902 and was landed as a Bluejacket with her 12-inch guns as part of the Naval Brigade. Ratcliff was specially Commended for this work and also served ashore in China in 1900 (Medal & clasp).

He was selected for the Officer Section on 15 October 1909 and was Pensioned (Unfit) on 2 March 1911. Recalled for the Great War, he died on 2 January 1935.
