George MacHardy was born in Banffshire, Scotland around 1867 and worked as a Ploughman before attesting for the 2nd Dragoons in February 1886. Seeing Home Service until November 1899 he was posted to South Africa for service in the Second Boer War with the rank of Lance-Corporal.

With this unit he was part of General French's attempt to relieve Kimberley and afterwards was involved in the fighting at Paardeberg and Driefontein. Promoted Corporal on 10 April 1900, MacHardy was with his unit during the Guerrilla phase of the war when they were split between various columns.

Promoted Squadron Sergeant-Major in February 1901 he held this rank for the rest of his career. MacHardy remained in South Africa until 8 June 1904 when he returned home and served here until November 1906. Upon discharge he gave his address as Govan, Glasgow; sold together with copied research including service papers, census data and a photograph of a Squadron Sergeant-Major of the Scots Greys which may be the recipient along with typed research.
