G. Needham is confirmed on the Medal Roll with entitlement to these two clasps, and was the only Farrier-Sergeant in the Battery. During the Defence of Kimberley, the Diamond Fields Artillery comprised some 97 men and six guns; originally entirely outranged by more modern Boer artillery pieces, they later manned the famous 4.1-inch 'Long Cecil' which enabled the defenders to return effective fire against their foe.
