(x) An impressive campaign group of three awarded to Sergeant A. MacDonald Donaldson, Diamond Field Horse and Kimberley Volunteer Regiment, who retained some unusual relics from his time in the famous Sieges of the Boer War
Cape of Good Hope General Service 1880-97, 1 clasp, Bechuanaland (Pte. A. Mc.D. Donaldson. Diamond Field Horse.); Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Defence of Kimberley, Paardeberg (106 Serjt: A. MacD. Donaldson. Kimb: Vol: Regt.); Mayor of Kimberley’s Star 1899-1900, unnamed as issued, reverse hallmark with date letter ‘a’, with integral top riband bar, the reverse attractively engraved 'Sergt. A. M. Donaldson Diamond Field Horse.', very fine (3)
Sold together with an attractive hallmarked gold fob Medal, this engraved 'D.F.H. Trooper A. M. Donaldson. Kimberley 24th May 1897. E. Troop Sword Squad', and also mounted with a pair of gold-mounted spent pistol rounds, one engraved 'Kimberley Siege 1899-1900' and the other 'Mafeking Siege 1899-1900.'
It is interesting to note that according to the Casualty List 'during the siege', published on 24 April 1900, the Colonial Forces had the following losses - but this list is clearly supplementary to the losses already noted on the occasion of the sorties in November:
Diamond Fields Artillery: Sergeant Major Moss killed and 11 men wounded.
Diamond Fields Horse: 14 killed; Captains Bodley and Waldeck, Lieutenant Smith, Sergeant Major Macdonald, and 10 non-commissioned officers and men wounded. Cape Police: 12 killed; Major Ayliff and Captains White and Rush, and 27 non-commissioned officers and men wounded.
