Richard Carter was a shoemaker, who lied regarding his age upon his enlistment at St Sepulchre, Northampton on 5 April 1858. Carter served a total of 21 years, earning his L.S. & G.C. on 1 January 1877, of which nearly twelve were in the Mediterranean and was discharged at Gibraltar on 8 March 1879. Upon his final examination at Netley on 15 April 1879, giving intended place of residence was North Bar Street, Banbury, Oxfordshire.
