George Mainwaring was appointed Ensign on 3 May 1815 and was advanced Lieutenant on 17 September 1817. He served with the 87th Regiment in Burma in 1825-26 (Medal & clasp), being made Captain on 5 June 1840. Serving with the 22nd in this rank, he was present with the force under Sir Charles Napier during the operations in Scinde in 1843, which included the destruction of the Fort at Imaumghur besides the Battles of Meeanee and Hyderabad (Medal). He retired Major on 28 November 1854.
