Narbahadur Rana is listed as being wounded while a Havildar serving with the unit in Italy on 17 January 1944. The Battalion had arrived in Italy, as part of the 4th Indian Division, in mid-December 1943 and had gone into the line in mid-January 1944 near Orsogna, adjacent to the Adriatic.

On their second night in action a Platoon accupied a forward position, where it came under intense small arms and mortar fire, resulting in eight casualties, one of these assumed to have been Rana.

These were the first Battalion battle casualties of the Italian Campaign. A month later the unit were one of the lead Battalions on the assault of Monte Cassino.
