(x) Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 2 clasps, Lucknow, Relief of Lucknow (A. Stewart, 90th Lt. Infy), contact marks and edge bruising, nearly very fine
Archibald Steward was born at Ballyclare, Antrim in 1835 and attested with the 67th Regiment of Foot at Belfast on 27 December 1854. He transferred to the 90th Light Infantry (Perthshire Volunteers) on 1 February 1856 and served with them in India for the next sixteen years and five months. They arrived in India in 1857 and joined General Havelock's Army in its march on Lucknow. Despite heavy fighting they managed to break through to the Residency, but soon found themselves besieged again and forced to hold out until relief.
After 61 days of siege they were relieved by Sir Colin Campbell's army. Steward continued to serve in India for the bulk of his career, re-engaging at Meerut on 28 November 1863. He was finally discharged on 23 December 1874; sold together with a copied service record which confirms he was also in receipt of the L.S. & G.C. Medal.
