Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian die (No. 923 Edward Truman 17th Lancers.), pierced with dual rings, very fine

Purchased Roy Woolley, April 1997, as advertised in The Armourer. A 4-clasp Crimea Medal named in exactly the same fashion as this Medal was sold in the famous Stansfield Collection, Spink, 1984, Lot 177.

Edward Truman (also noted as 'Trowman') was a shoemaker prior to his enlistment in the 17th Lancers on 24 May 1847. He is confirmed as having ridden in the Charge of the Light Brigade and was in the defaulters book on numerous occasions. On his discharge the Medical Report stated:

'This man is weakly and delicate and unfit for the service, from broken down constitution caused by his military service, and not the result of indulgences in the use of intoxicating liquids, or signs of other vices, conduct in hospital good.'

In a letter dated 6 February 1897 sent to John Richardson, 11th Hussars, by Colonel Young, Secretary of the Royal Commission of the Patriotic Fund, the list of those survivors of the Charge in receipt of the Relief Fund included an 'Edward Truman, 17th Lancers'.
