(x) New Zealand 1845-66, undated reverse (605. Corpl. John Rice, 40th Foot.), good very fine

John Rice attested for service in the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot on 25 September 1860 at Liverpool, giving his age as 22 and his profession as 'Servant'. Rice is confirmed on the Roll with entitlement to the New Zealand Medal; the 40th served in Australia for several years from June 1852 and in December 1854 were involved in the suppression of the Eureka Rebellion before being posted to New Zealand for the Taranaki and Waikato campaigns.
