D.C.M. Edinburgh Gazette 5 September 1918:
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This non-commissioned officer was in charge of two machine guns in the front line, and, though under heavy shell fire and amidst many casualties, he held on, repulsing the enemy's strenuous endeavours to regain a footing in the position they had
lost. He remained in his forward position for seven days - a fine example of fortitude and endurance - while his cheerful determination and initiative did much to keep up the morale of his men.'
George Phillips, a native of Kennington, served in France from 15 March 1915.
