Arthur William Egerton Brydges Barrett was born on 29 July 1858 at Bath, Somerset. Appointed Surgeon in the Royal Navy on 25 August 1881, Barrett joined the Cygnet, a composite gunboat, in the Mediterranean on 6 January 1883. He took part in the operations at Suakin in 1885 (Medal & clasp). Barrett was discharged ashore, with a gratuity, on 4 September 1889.
