India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Saml. Madden, Asst. Surgn. “Rattler”), edge bruising, nearly very fine

The Medal Roll confirms the Medal should have been named to Madden as an Assistant Engineer rather than as an Assistant Surgeon.

Samuel Madden was born on 25 May 1825 and he entered the Royal Navy as an Assistant Engineer on 25 November 1847. In December he joined the Hydra, serving on her until February 1850.

He then served on Fisgard, Flamer, Blenheim and Fisgard again before joining the Rattler in September 1851. He served on her until May 1856.

In February 1857 he was promoted to Chief Engineer serving on the Ajax, Pelorus, Indus and Ocean. In January 1870 Madden was advanced to Acting Inspector of Machinery on Princess Charlotte. November 1870 saw him reverting to Chief Engineer. After a short time on the books of the Agincourt he joined the Minotaur and was invalided from the service in August 1872.
