With the recent publication of Bull's corpus of English Gold Coins, collectors will undoubtedly pay closer attention to legend varieties, overdates and die-sinker's errors previously overlooked in this extensive and popular series. New discoveries however remain very rare. Nevertheless, the present example provides another important discovery, missed by the latest Bull publication and by our annual catalogue, as well as surprisingly, by another well-known London auctioneer in a sale in the Spring of this year (DNW 190, 6 April 2021, lot 519), of which this coin is evidently from the same dies as that presently offered.
