Italy: Canal Cavour - Compagnia Generale dei Canali Italiani d'Irrigazione, 500 lire share, 1862, 12 examples, attractive printing, black with yellow-brown underprint, with coupons. The canal was named after Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, prime minister of Piedmont, and was instigated to irrigate the dry areas of the State, mainly for rice production. It starts at Chivasso, taking water from the Po running 82 km to the Ticino at Galliate. A brilliant feat of engineering, the costs bankrupted the company in 1868 and has been managed by the State since 1874. Centre fold otherwise EF (12).
