(x) U.S.A.: Phillip Best Brewing Company, Wisconsin, $1000 share, 187[3], #171, issued to Frederick Pabst and signed by him both on the reverse and on the stub which is reattached at the left. Also signed by Charles Best Jr. as secretary and Emil Schandein as Vice President. Vignettes of the Empire and South Side Breweries in Milwaukee, black. Frederick Pabst (1836-1904), a German-American met Phillip Best whilst captaining a small steamer on Lake Michigan. Pabst married Best's daughter Maria in 1862 and 2 years later was taken into partnership in the Phillip Best Brewery, becoming President in 1873. Schandein married Best's other daughter and was sold the other half of the business. He died in 1894. The company name was later changed to Pabst Brewing Company. It became the first Brewer in American to sell more than 1 million barrels in a year. VF.
