France/Italy: Mediterranean Electric Telegraph, pair of certificates for £10/250 francs, 1853, signed by John W. Brett as director, the second overprinted in red 'Emission Francaise', attractive coats of arms of France, Great Britain and Sardinia at top, black, text in mixed French, English and Italian, embossed seal at top. This underwater (submarine) telegraph connected the Islands of Corsica and Sardinia and then onwards to the North coast of Algeria. The African cable failed on several attempts and the concession was surrendered in 1856. John W. Brett was a pioneer of submarine cables in Europe and was also involved with the Atlantic cable in 1854. VF (2).
