Military Mail
First Burmese War, 1824-26
1825 (18 Jan.) entire letter from Lt. William Gossip of the 41st Regiment at Rangoon to Tadcastle and redirected to York, marked "ship letter", variously rated, showing "out station/madras/ship letter" double-lined oval d.s. (4.3) and, on reverse, manuscript "4" and "11 As the 24th Feby 1825", mainly fine rare boxed "ingeram/post not paid" partly overstruck by red London transit c.d.s. (12.9) and framed "india letter/deal". The contents include "..we are expecting to march for Prome in a very short time...we are certainly to move shortly, but how and when seems to puzzle everybody". A fine expedition cover. (with transcript)

Note: This letter was written after the capture of Rangoon where the British forces had finally repulsed the Burmese army on 15 December, partly thanks to the use of Congreve Rockets.
