1897 (3 Sept.) 2d. External card written on board the gunboat H.M.S. Mosquito by the ships assistant surgeon W.H. Stalkaart, who later rose to the rank of Rear Admiral, to his mother in Southsea, neatly cancelled by Chinde datestamp and with Portsmouth datestamp (21.10) on reverse. A fine item of mail sent during the period when the British Navy, operating out of the British Concession at Chinde, maintained a presence on the Zambezi and Shire rivers as well as Lake Nyassa to preserve international waterway status and prevent slavery
