Lot: 1124

Bermuda
1871 (4 May) mourning envelope (flap missing) to London, marked "via New York", bearing 1865-1903 1d. and 6d. (faults) tied by barred oval with "hamilton/bermuda" c.d.s. alongside

Note: The 7d. rate marked 'via New York' was seldom used. Ludington states "From about 1860-1871 letters were marked in red pencil with the amont credited to the country of destination" thus here, 5d. was for the journey to England, 1d. for the U.S. and the balance for local (Bermuda) services.
