Note: When the Cunard Line established a terminus at Halifax in 1854, letters originating in or forwarded through St. Thomas were sometimes sent to Halifax to connect with the transatlantic steamers. The cost of this service was 1d. although it is not mentioned on the covers. The U.S. "Steamship 10" marking supports this argument. Letters originating in British Colonies and postally treated as above, usually have both the British and U.S. markings
