Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Anonymous (c.960-1214), gold Kahavanu (2), 4.25g, 4.51g, type III (C), Jasmine flower and chank (conch), standing figure of Ceylon style, two symbols under arm in left field, holding jasmine bud right, four annulets below right with one solid pellet above, beneath feet a line connecting a conch on left and jasmine bud on right, rev. figure seated right on an asana (low throne), holding a conch, Devanagari legend in right field Sri Lamka Vibhu (fortunate lord of Sri Lanka) (Cod. 54; Mitchiner, Southern India, part 2, 311-2), both very fine, but first with small part of edge missing, the second with wire mount attached, AE Kahavanu of similar design (6), issued by Sahasa Malla, Dharmasoka Deva, Parakrama Bahu II (2), Bhuvaneka Bahu I (Cod. 81,82, 84, 87), generally very fine or nearly so; Roman (used in Ceylon c.5th-6th century AD), minor Bronze coins (9), poor to about fine; China, bronze Cash from the medieval period (2), fine (19)

provenance
Part of a collection of coins formed by Mr Campbell, a tea planter of Nuwara Eliya in the early 20th century. He regularly correspondeded with Mr H. W. Codrington (famous for having later written 'Ceylon Coins and Currency,' published by Richards, Government Printer, Ceylon, 1924), which is still a standard reference work on the subject today.
