Spain, Philip II (1556-1598), Cast AE Medal [1555], by Jacopo Nizolla da Trezzo, cuirassed bust of Philip II right, rev. Apollo driving the chariot of the sun flying over the sea and a rocky landscape, 65mm., 94.73g, 1h (cf. Kress 437; cf. Lanna 691; Börner 773), a later casting with resulting softness in devices, nevertheless an imposing portrait, good very fine
Jacopo da Trezzo (c. 1514-1589), was a Milanese goldsmith and engraver who worked for the Habsburgs and for Philip II from his workshop in Brussels. He lated visited the Spanish court in 1559. The reverse of this medal depicts Philip II’s personal emblem and motto: ‘Now he will illuminate all things.’ The original medal, of which this is a later restrike appears to have been issued pierced for wear, perhaps by supporters of his, and his controversial wife Queen Mary Tudor of England, the medal for whom he is most famously known.
