The Baron di Dinan Collection | Albrecht von Wallenstein, Duke of Friedland (1623-1634), AR Medal, '1631', by P C Becker after H Rieger, struck c. 1731, ALBERTVS D: G: DVX MEGA : FRID : ET : SAG : PRIN : VAN :, armoured three-quarter bust right, rev. Coat-of-Arms in Order of the Golden Fleece, edge plain, 38mm., 27.03g, 12h (Noheljlová-Prátová [1969], pp. 56, Fig. 7b), sumptuously toned and lustrous, near extremely fine, very rare
Emanuela Noheljlová-Prátová, in her 1969 standard work on Wallenstein coinage, pointed out the strange fact that "the great personality of Wallenstein was relatively very rarely depicted on medals". It could only prove four contemporary medals by the Wroclaw stamp cutter Hans Rieger and one by the Jitschin stamp cutter Konrad Freibösen. The author was only aware of one medal from the 18th century, namely the present work, probably from 1731 by the Viennese medalist Philipp Christoph Becker, who imitated Hans Rieger's portrait medal from 1631. Becker even left the year 1631 next to the ducal hat, in which he put his signature, and only changed the shape of the coat of arms.
