Sir John Moore made a name for himself during the opening years of the Napoloenic Wars as a reformer and exponent of the British Army's Light Infantry arm. First seeing active service during the American Revolutionary War, he was afterward involved in various campaigns in the Mediterrannean, Caribbean Islands, and the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
Commanding a British force in the Iberian Peninsula from 1808, a withdrawal to the strategic port of Corunna led to the battle of the same name on 16 January 1809. Moore was fatally wounded during this action, being hit in the upper chest by a roundshot; he was buried that evening in the town (his impressive tomb still exists) and was subsequently commemorated in art and verse in addition to medallic form.
