Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (290908 William Halls, Ldg. Sto. H.M.S. Diana:), very fine
William Halls was born at Ipswich, Suffolk on 14 August 1880. Enlisting at Devonport on 16 January 1899 with the rank of Stoker Class II and promoted Stoker Class I on 5 December 1905. Halls served aboard H.M.S. Diana from 27 September 1913-26 April 1914 and it was while he was here that he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Just before the outbreak of the Great War he transferred to H.M.S. Challenger on 27 April 1914 being advanced Stoker Petty-Officer on 22 January 1916. He remained with this vessel until 11 January 1918 when he transferred to the Stokers and Engine Room Artificers School in Devonport, H.M.S. Vivid II. He remained ashore until being shore pensioned on 14 February 1921. Further entitled to 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals.
