A Great War M.C. attributed to Superintending Clerk J. Armstrong, Royal Engineers

John Armstrong was born in January 1874 and joined the Royal Engineers in November 1898, serving at home until the outbreak of the Great War, whence he served in France from 26 August 1914. Armstrong was awarded the M.C. and a 'mention' (London Gazette 17 February 1915, refers) before War's end. Armstrong was tried by Court Martial for having absented himself from Montigny, France for some 13 and a half hours on 23 February 1916, being reduced to the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant and having three months pay docked. He lived at The Nook, Pevensey Bay, East Sussex.
