Four: Lieutenant-Colonel A. G. B. Walker, Somerset Light Infantry

Anthony Gerald Bartholomew Walker was born at Hanover Square, London on 24 August 1912, the son of Josepha Margaret and Lieutenant Colonel Bertram James Walker, C.M.G., D.S.O. Educated at Harrow, London he then joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, passing out with a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry on 2 February 1933. Poor health meant that much of his long career was spent as a Staff and Training Officer across the UK and abroad. However, Walker was clearly a very capable officer as, in August 1954, a report written by General Heath (President of the Regular Commissions Board and former G.O.C. Malta) recommended him for a senior appointment on the War Office Selection Board. This report states:

'He has had considerable staff experience mainly on the 'A' side including 1st Grade or equivalent appointments. I judge him fully capable of doing a Lieut. Col's job E.R.E. and the recommendation at paragraph 8 is based on this.

Walker served in this role for a year, retiring on 18 May 1955 with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel. He died on 24 March 1999; sold together with matching miniature medals, a Somerset Light Infantry car badge by J.R.Gaunt, London, and a most charming and attractive hallmarked silver, enamel and paste-stone Somerset Light Infantry 'sweetheart' brooch.
