Ernest Edmund Howard was born at Wornbridge, Hereford on 16 February 1911 and enlisted in the South Wales Borderers on 26 March 1932. Having seen active service on the North West Frontier, he was posted missing, later confirmed taken Prisoner of War with the 1st Battalion on 21 June 1942. At that time the Battalion were near Tobruk. Howard was held at Campo 73, Capri, Italy and thence at Stalag XVIII-A at Wolfsburg.
