Not long later he fell ill, enjoying a stretch in Bradford War Hospital from 22 October 1917-29 January 1918. Joining 1/8th Battalion Slack served with it from 18 August until 30 March 1918 when he transferred to 21st Battalion. The next month on 2 April 1918 he transferred again, on this occasion to the 13th Battalion, Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment with the number 46228. He was twice in trouble with his new regiment, the first time on 6 June 1918 for not having shaved for duty and again, far more seriously, for neglect of duty while escorting enemy POWs on 17 June 1918. Slack was transferred to the Z Class reserve on 14 December 1919.
