Jabez Lowbridge was born in 1885 and enlisted with the South Staffordshire Regiment on 14 June 1908. By the time of the war he was a Sergeant with 3rd Battalion, but at some stage transferring to the 2/6th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment which did not enter the war in France until February 1917, although they did take part in actions in Ireland in 1916. His brother Charlie Lowbridge served in the same Regiment, with the 7th Battalion and took part in the fighting at Gallipoli with the rank of Lance Corporal. Lowbridge was severely wounded by a gas shell on 1 December 1917 and taken to 22 General Hospital, Dannes-Camiers, France. Surviving his injuries he was appointed Company Sergeant-Major in the Special Reserve on 2 August 1917. He continued to serve with 2nd Battalion however fell ill on 6 March 1918 and was invalided. After the war he lived at Walsall, Staffordshire; sold together with the recipients cap badges, silver war badge and sergeants mess pass in its leather wallet along with original documentation comprising a postcard from his brother likely from before 1916, an official letter to his wife in December 1917 detailing his injuries and the warrant from the Secretary of state for war promoting him to Company Sergeant-Major.
