James Kidson Darby was born on 18 April 1888 at All Hallows, Leeds, and attested in his hometown for the 1st West Riding Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, on 6 August 1914. An advertising specialist by trade, he served in France from 13 April 1915 and was appointed to a commission not long thereafter on 12 November 1915. Likely serving on the Somme, Darby suffered a shell wound to the ribs on 3 July 1916, which necessitated evacuation home via the hospital ship Marama.

Returning to the Western Front on 15 February 1917, he was attached to the 6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment on 31 October 1917 and proceeded back to England shortly afterwards after being accepted for admission to an Officer Cadet Unit. Following the cessation of hostilities he likely returned home to 10 Roman Place, Roundhay, Leeds.
