Queen's South Africa 1899-1902 , 6 clasps, Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen (65860 Corpl. R. H. Newman. R.H.A.), sometime cleaned, nearly extremely fine

Richard Henry Newman was born at Stepney, Middlesex in 1868. Enlisting with the Royal Artillery on 27 January 1888 he was posted to India on 19 February 1889. Returning to Britain on 13 December 1893 he transferred to the Special Reserve two years later on 27 January 1895. With the outbreak of the Second Boer War he was recalled on 12 December 1899 with the rank of Acting Bombardier, promoted Corporal on 16 February 1900. Newman was posted to South Africa on 22 November 1900 to serve with 1 Pdr Maxims (PomPoms), Royal Artillery, his entry on the medal roll for this unit adds the note that he served with the 'Galoping [SIC] Maxims'. He was discharged on 3 March 1901. Attesting again for the reserves with the 24th Middlesex (Post Office) Rifle Corps resuming the rank of Corporal on 1 March 1907. Serving with this rank he was embodied on the outbreak of the Great War on 5 August 1914 however was not fit for service and on 12 October 1914 he transferred to the Army Service Corps Remounts section with whom he served for the duration. Finally he was discharged on 31 March 1920. Further entitled to the Territorial Efficiency Medal, British War and Victory Medals.
