Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (3641 Pte E. Smith, 1st Cam'n: Highrs:), edge bruise, contact marks, nearly very fine

Ernest Smith was born at Moseborough, Cheshire in 1878. Attesting with the rank of Boy on 7 November 1894 with the Cameron Highlanders he was posted to Gibraltar with the 1st Battalion on 25 September 1895. While serving here he achieved his majority and was promoted Private on 7 September 1896. Transferring to 2nd Battalion on 21 April 1897 he returned to Britain on 26 April. The next year on 2 April 1898 Smith transferred at his own request to the Army Reserve, however with the outbreak of the Boer War he re-joined his Regiment on 26 December 1899 being posted to 1st Battalion that same day. Preceding his Regiment he arrived in South Africa on 15 February 1900, the Battalion arrived on 3 March 1900 part of the reinforcements being poured into the country after the setbacks of 1899. Smith remained in South Africa until 5 August 1802 returned to Britain, he stayed with the Battalion for several months but again transferred to the Reserve on 27 April 1903 being discharged entirely on 6 November 1906.
