Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (4193 Pte J. J. Wright. Cheshire Regi.), good very fine

John Joseph Wright was born at Oldham, Lancashire around 1870 and worked there as a Sindle Maker prior to enlistment. He served at some point in the 4th Battalion, North Lancashire Regiment before later joining the Cheshire Regiment. He served first in India from 10 November 1894 and while there appears to have misbehaved considerably, suffering frequently from syphilis between June 1896-April 1899 and being hospitalised for the complaint on no less than seven occasions over those three years. Fortunately, both for his own health and that of the ladies of Secunderbad, Wright was posted to South Africa on 17 April 1902 in order to take part in the Second Boer War. Serving there with the 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.

Leaving the Cheshire Regiment after twelve years however in the run up to the Great War he attested for the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers on 29 August 1914. He was at the time living in Hollinwood, Oldham and working as a Labourer. This Battalion spent the war on home service and as such Wright spent the rest of 1914 in England however he was transferred to 1st Garrison Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment and posted to Egypt on 16 August 1915. Transferring again to the Royal Army Medical Corps, West Lancashire Division he served with this unit from 19 February 1918-4 August 1918 whereupon he returned to 1st Garrison Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment. Transferring to the 'Z' class Reserve on 14 July 1919 he returned to Oldham. Further entitled to a 1915 Star and British War and Victory Medal pair.
