Alfred Bradshaw was born at St. Pancras, London on 18 November 1867. Enlisting with the rank of Boy Class II on 19 January 1883 at the training establishment Impregnable, he had moved on to Ganges by 28 January. Promoted Boy Class I the next year (20 January 1884) he was again transferred to a new training establishment, Sultan, on
