Alexander Ross was born in Chester in 1865. Enlisting in 1884 with the Cheshire Regiment, he was posted to the 1st Battalion and went with them to India, serving with the Fort White Column in the Chin-Lushai expedition of 1889-90. He later served during the Second Boer War with 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Further entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal.
