Robert McAllister was born in 1874 at Sunderland and joined the Royal Artillery on 28 January 1893. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 5 December 1899-22 September 1902, being slightly wounded due to shell splinter to his right hand 'at Colenso' (Tugela Heights) on 23 February 1900. In 1902 28 Battery converted to become the Royal Artillery Mounted Rifles. Having been discharged in February 1909, McAllister was working as a coal mine stone shifter upon the outbreak of the Great War. Having re-enlisted on 12 September 1914, he served in France on 9 March 1915.
