King's South Africa 1901-02, claps replaced with ring (7080 Pte. R. Gaydon. K.R.R.C.), nearly very fine

Robert Gaydon was born at Millwall in 1874 and listed his father, at the Goldsmiths Building on Drury Lane as his next of kin upon his joining the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1892.

Gaydon was slightly wounded on 8 September 1900 near Lydenburg, suffering a splinter wound to his nose. Two days prior Captain (later Field Marshal - his Baton sold in these rooms) Chetwode had taken that place with a Squadron of the 19th (Princess of Wales's Own) Hussars from the 2nd Cavalry Brigade of the Natal Army by the sheriff on 6 September 1900. As it was continually under fire from a 155 mm Creusot cannon, 'Long Tom', sited on Paardeplaats (1) to the east, an attack was mounted on that farm two days later.'

Buller launched a successful attack on the [Mauchberg] heights surrounding it on 8 September 1900 from Lydenburg. Here Botha had command of some 2,000 burghers with two 'Long Toms' and several field guns. The Mauchberg was carried on the following day as Boer forces retired eastwards down the mountain evacuating their position at the Devil's Knuckles (1).
