William Craig was born in 1874 at Greenrock, Renfrew. Enlisting with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1892 with the number 3965 and while serving married Martha Ballance at Belfast on 16 December 1898. Discharged on 14 August 1904 having served for twelve years he returned to his family to Belfast. Re-enlisting with the Army Service Corps on 19 November 1914 at the rank of Sergeant, Craig's experience was clearly appreciated, being promoted Warrant Officer Class II a short time later on 15 December 1914. Advanced Staff Sergeant Major on 15 April 1915 he joined the war in France on 5 October 1915. Discharged to the Army Reserve on 14 February 1919 Craig returned to his family at 4 Edmund St., Belfast on 10 March 1920.
