Herbert Pickard was born at Weeton, Yorkshire in 1879. He married Jane Annie Stork in Otley on 17 February 1903 and worked as a Gardener in Leeds, having four children between 4 February 1905 and 15 July 1915. This last child might explain his late enlistment with 3/4 West Riding (Howitzer) Brigade on 16 November 1916 at Keighley.
Pickard served in France on 11 October 1916 before transferring to Salonica on 17 January 1917. He remained there until 2 July before being posted to Egypt where he remained until 8 August 1919. Demobilised at Catterick 25 December 1918; sold together with copied M.I.C., service records and handwritten notes.
