Albert Edward Hughes was born at Ilfracombe, Devon and enlisted in Bristol with 12th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment (Bristol's Own). This formation entered the war in France on 21 November 1915, serving in the trenches from 6 December. Seeing action during the Somme Offensive from July 1916, they were later involved in the attack on Guillemont on 3 September. Hughes was killed at this time and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with handwritten research, copied research and original Records Office Correspondence confirming the issue of awards.
